Get Them Talking is a series of resources to help families start conversations about issues of faith.
Scripture
Everyone should give whatever they have decided in their heart. They shouldn’t give with hesitation or because of pressure. God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7, Common English Bible
Reflection
Parents often teach children to receive by saying, “Thank you.” We also teach them to share with a friend or sibling. At other times, it is important to teach our children to give.
Generosity doesn’t always come easy. One of the keys is to understand that all we have is a gift from God to us. When we are grateful for what we have received, we are more likely to give to others. Following God’s example of generosity is what makes us cheerful givers.
Get them talking
- Name something for which you are thankful.
- When have you had to ask someone for something?
- When has giving been difficult? When has it made you feel good?
- Why do you think God asks us to be generous?
Prayer
Teach me, O God, to be generous. Amen.
Activity
Gather items to donate to a local thrift shop. Talk about how the items will be a blessing to the recipients.
