The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) is the leadership development agency of The United Methodist Church, the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry prepares global leaders for a global church and the world.
About the Role:
The Communications Associate ensures the smooth operation of the communications department by managing a wide range of projects and tasks for Global Ministries and Higher Education and Ministry. Acting as a gatekeeper for the communications team, the Associate interacts with a diverse group of employees, internal and external customers, vendors, and business partners in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment. This role requires excellent rapport-building and diplomatic skills, effective teamwork, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaboration and Support:
- Partner closely with the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) and Project Manager to plan and produce project deliverables.
- Provide administrative support to the CCO.
Event Management:
- Lead event planning and execution for the communications team, including arranging and preparing promotional materials.
Administrative and Communication Support:
- Schedule and manage meetings, attend departmental and other assigned meetings.
- Take and summarize meeting minutes, highlighting key points, actions taken, next steps, and assigning ownership in collaboration with the project manager.
- Assist in writing content for announcements, press releases, presentations, memos, emails, and other materials to effectively communicate the organization’s message to employees, partners, and stakeholders.
- Lead the creation and distribution of the joint agency internal newsletter.
- Update branding and style guidelines for both agencies.
- Develop and update creative pieces using Canva and/or Adobe InDesign, providing basic design updates.
- Provide day-to-day budget tracking support to the CCO, including bill payment.
Digital Asset Management:
- Coordinate the management of communications digital image assets (e.g., photo assets and branding assets) and collateral.
- Organize, catalogue, and maintain the digital asset bank.
- Coordinate fulfillment projects and manage the agency’s online store.
Translation Liaison:
- Liaise with translators on projects, fielding questions and providing key information and resources.
Other Duties:
- Perform other duties as needed.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field preferred, but not required.
- 2-4 years of experience (internship experience considered) in communications, public relations, or marketing.
- Proficient in writing, editing, and oral communication skills. Knowledge of AP style is a plus.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, proactive problem-solver with a proven track record in active listening.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and efficiently on multi-step, detail-oriented projects in a fluid environment.
- Exposure to design software, such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign, is a plus.
- Familiarity with digital asset management systems and online store management.
- Experience in event planning and execution.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and project management tools.

Working Conditions:
- This is a hybrid position. Candidates should be able to come in for in-office work from time, likely not exceeding 1 day per week or 1 week per month.
- Hours: 37. 5 hours weekly (Monday - Friday; flexible start and stop time between 7:00am - 7:00pm)
- Travel as required to attend meetings, training, or other events; outside the US may be necessary on occasion.
