Church Cookbooks as Time Capsules

What were Americans feeding their families and taking to church potlucks a hundred years ago? Vintage Methodist cookbooks are time capsules, allowing us a look at food culture, nutrition, family food budgets, and the availability of food items in a particular region at the time. The 1914 Hamilton Cookbook is a treasure! Compiled by Women of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Hamilton, Ohio, the cookbook is full of fascinating and unique recipes. The entire cookbook is available to view

We also tried two recipes from the Hamilton Cookbook in the Our United Methodist Table test kitchen. View Irish Potato Pie and Cream of Peanut Soup.
